LESSON PLAN – USING NEW TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

LEVEL: high school – 2^nd or 3^rd year (students within 16-17 years of age).

CONTEXT: high school classroom. English class at a private school in Osvaldo Cruz, SP.

THEME: Jersey. Take a trip to a small island with lots to discover.

JUSTIFICATION: Make learning process of English more accurate and enjoyable for students using new technologies in the classroom.

OBJECTIVE: Introduce new cultural information about a region in Great Britain and new vocabulary to the students using a podcast. Promote improvement on their English skills and cultural baggage.

RESOURCES: school laboratory containing 10 computers, a sound system and a whiteboard and worksheet with the exercises described in the steps that follow.

ACTIVITY STEPS:

Discovering Jersey.

Open the following website: http://www.jersey.com/ and click on English. Read the information about the island and then answer the questions:

a. How many square kilometres is Jersey?

b. What is a Jersey Royal?

c. What are the Green Lanes?

d. What is a chiffchaff?

e. Why is it easier to see Red Squirrels in Jersey than on the UK mainland?

f. What do the puffin, razorbill, fulmar and petrel have in common?

Listening about Jersey

Play the podcast twice and talk with the students about what they have heard. Share information in Portuguese if you like.

Listening for details

Play the podcast again and ask the students to do the following activity. During this process, work vocabulary discussing possible new words and their meanings.

Read the following sentences carefully and put a tick (√) to show if the sentences are True or False:

a. Jersey is the smallest of a group of islands.

b. The islands have different names.

c. The islands are near France.

d. Most people on Jersey speak French.

e. Young people are interested in learning Jersey French.

f. In the past only women and children knitted.

Quite impressive how we can find technology everywhere and with an increasing velocity. Podcast, for exemple, who would say five years ago that today we could record ourselves talking about any issue we like and upload it on the internet? That’s why I like being part of the 21st century generation.

We can find podcasts all over the internet. There are a huge number of websites and blogs that provide podcasts about any subject you wish to be downloaded, and most of the time they are all free of charge!

To learn English I reckon that podcast is one of the most enjoyable source of data to work with students! We can improve the students’ vocabulary, pronunciation and listening skills only using a podcast! In addition, getting away from the board and the book for a while is always a great idea!

Ok, let’s press the SAP bottom and use Portuguese once for a change?

Dentre todos os outros assuntos, faltei justamente no encontro onde foi apresentado o tal do m-learning! Como não estava na aula, sei bem pouco sobre essa ferramenta que nunca tinha ouvido falar antes!

Bem, não sei se o m-learning é uma ferramenta em sí ou um grupo de ferramentas usadas para um único fim: o ensino. Mas afinal, o que é o m-learning? Tive que recorrer à internet pra poder responder! Vamos lá:

O m-learning é a fusão de diversas tecnologias de processamento e comunicação de dados que permite ao grupo de estudantes e aos professores uma maior interação. O m-learning faz uso de diversas ferramentas como as tecnologias em redes sem fio, dos recursos fornecidos pela telefonia celular, da linguagem JAVA (todo mundo conhece essa linguagem mesmo se for por causa dos joguinhos de celular), dos serviços de correio postal (a caixa posta do celular ou até mesmo do telefone fixo), serviços de SMS (ou torpedos), e até mesmo o nosso bom e velho e-mail pode ser uma ferramenta m-learning!

E já que todos nós usamos essas ferramentas no nosso dia a dia, por que não usá-las também para aprender? O ensino ficar mais atrativo e dinâmico. Quando maior a facilidade do uso, maior será a possibilidade do sucesso da aprendizagem!

Quem diria que um dia poderíamos aprender inglês com ferramentas que não vivemos mais sem, não é? o/

Yeah, I have to admit that I’ve been a little absent from my tumblr, but you guys know, working and being a student at the same time can be tiring sometimes and nowadays I enjoy my free time sleeping or just relaxing on the sofa! lol

Excuses made, there are two topics I still have to write about and they are a little unclear in my head, but in the next posts I will be writing about m-learning and podcast… so, wait and check it out!

I had another idea since I cannot draw anything. Why not ask students to make the slides using simple pictures like those from Clip Art according to a specific song?

I love teaching songs using pictures!

For this song, I drew the same pics of the video in sheets of paper.

First I show the pics and ask them to read the senteces as if they were part of a love story or a poem, but I don’t say it’s a song. At the end, I play the song showing the pictures. Some of my kids have a great visual memory and they never forget the song!

Ok, here we are again!

It’s interesting to notice that the more you think you know about new technologies, more you get convinced that you know nothing at all. This subject is excellent just because of that. It brings you a whole new scenario of options of activities and technology uses in the classroom.

Today, for instance, we are discussing this new tool - wiki - which enables users to share and edit information about all sorts of things in a quick way. And it may be a very good tool when it comes to Education. Using this along with your classroom or school may help students and other teachers to develop a lot of knowledge and increase the pleasure in learning new technology as well.

Let’s wait and see where it goes! =)

The tumblr case

Speaking of technology and its potencial benefits, let me say a few words about this very tumblr. It showed up sometime ago while I was searching for information about movies I like and so I started checking some tumblrs out but never quite understood how they worked.

I have some friends who have tumblr accounts and say they’re addicted to it and now that I am part of this world I can see they got a point! It’s my second post but I am discovering a whole new tool that can be very much useful! I hope I can keep up the good work and get the most I can from tumblr! o/

Disciplina sobre novas tecnologias! Não podia ser mais apropriado, tô levando um banho desse tumblr!

Mas vamos às apresentações! Me chamo Hugo Gonçalves (ou Hugo Fazion, como gosto de ser chamado), tenho 24 anos e sou recém formado em Letras. Sou bacharel em Tradução, licenciado em Letras e pós graduando na Especialização em Formação de Professor, pela UEM.

Atuo como professor de Língua Inglesa em um cursinho de idiomas na cidade onde moro (Osvaldo Cruz, SP) faz 2 anos e em uma escola regular privada (aulas pro EF ciclo II), onde estou no meu primeiro ano letivo.

Creio que já nasci na “era da tecnologia”, então não encontro muitos problemas em relação ao uso delas no dia-a-dia. Na sala de aula, no caso do cursinho de idiomas, convivo com tecnologia diariamente, uma vez que todo o método de ensino de Inglês é embasado em lições audio-visuais utilizando TV, DVD, whiteboard e Internet. Mas é claro que, em tempos modernos como esses, surgem novas tecnologias a todo momento, por isso é importante tentar manter-se atualizado a elas!

Por enquanto acho que é isso, vamos acompanhar o desenvolvimento da Disciplina e do Curso por completo! =)
